Art in Oils
Dorothy Roddy
Hello and thanks for stopping by.
My name is Dorothy Roddy and I live and work in the beautiful Riverina area of NSW.
I first learned to draw from a book titled ‘Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain’ in 2013. I had always admired watercolours and wanted to paint them but was told I must learn to draw first.
I dabbled in the watercolours, then had a go at acrylics without finding my style. I decided it was time to try oils. Starting with lessons using water mixable oil I had found a medium which suited the way I work and allowed a little extra time to think before drying.
My skills have developed through practice and by choosing subjects in areas where I had little knowledge, researching and refining those skills. Attending diverse workshops with professional artists such as John Wilson, Lesley O’Shea and Joe Penn, and reading books has taught me a lot about technique and colour theory. My favourite book is Alla Prima II by Richard Schmidt as you can open the page at random and start reading and always learn something new.
All of these things have contributed to my knowledge and confidence. I changed to traditional oils in 2018 using Australian made Langridge Oils and haven’t looked back. I have settled on a version of ‘realistic impressionism’ to create my artworks, a style which comes naturally to me. My inspiration most often comes from my surroundings as well as places I have been. Some things just want to be painted. There is always so much more to learn and I look forward to all the new things I can acquire skills in.
Bringing old photos back to life, often sepia or black and white, through an oil painting is another exciting thing I like to do. I research the image to find where in time it was taken, then find out the colours and fashion of that time. When I have that information, I choose likely colours then match the tonal values to the original. I used that process on the painting Red Shoes which is my Mum circa 1933.
I hope you will return from time to time to see what is new and exciting.
Dorothy
